2010… I shall be brave and write about a not-altogether "Annus Horribilis", but one which was memorable for us both.
In February, Jed lost Ruth: truly shocking and unexpected. His whole world was shaken and turned upside down. She was his rock and best friend. In March 2010, I lost Dennis: not entirely unexpected, nevertheless quite a shock. Here we were - two friends, in the same social circle, who suddenly found ourselves alone.
As a foursome, Ruth, Jed, Dennis and I enjoyed many mutual interests together: films, books, music, good food and drink. After our bereavement, friends tried to fill the gaps by inviting Jed and me separately to various events. It felt a little awkward. Our losses were too fresh, but at least it didn't feel like a blind date. After some months, Jed plucked up the courage to ask if we might have "a date without a chaperone". It was a turning point for us both. We had found a good companion who needed no explanations nor had any expectations.
We have now been together for 15 years. I still find Jed full of energy, interesting & interested in life. His social skills are unparalleled. He is an amazing travelling companion and never says NO to any suggestion. At 90, he is indomitable and a beacon to us all. I feel blessed to have him in my life.
